Training week recap: Mar 21-27, 2016

I hope everyone had a fantastic Easter weekend!

Here's how my training week shook out:
MONDAY - 10 minutes on stationary bike, lift 35 minutes
TUESDAY - Yoga class, run 3 miles on treadmill
WEDNESDAY - Zumba class
THURSDAY - 10 minutes on stationary bike, lift 45 minutes
FRIDAY - Rest
SATURDAY - Kim's boxing class with Anne, 2.5 mile run
SUNDAY - Run 8.5 miles on treadmill, 3:1:1 run/incline/walk ratio with inclines at level 5

The highlight of the training week was definitely Kim's boxing class on Saturday with Anne. It was a lot of fun to mix up the weekly routine and do some different moves.
All the boxing students flashing our gloves and mitts.
Don't we look intense and intimidating??? Don't mess with us. =D

I've done some boxing workout classes before, but it's been awhile! Kim is a fantastic instructor and Anne was also super helpful getting me acclimated on the fly.

The boxing really targeted some new muscles for me. Yesterday my back, shoulders, and arms were killer sore. As I sit here typing this on Monday, the soreness has dissipated - but it's still not subtle by any stretch of the imagination!

Afterwards, Kim, Anne, and I went for a 2.5 mile run in the neighborhood. The weather was beautiful, the change of scenery was refreshing, and of course running with good company is always wonderful.

After all the adventures on Saturday, I had a very difficult time getting started on yesterday's long run. The weekend included a lot of scurrying around, so time was a significant constraint. The post-boxing soreness also added to my thoughts of skipping out. I really had to force myself to get moving. I grumbled a fair amount but inwardly bargained that "even a little bit is better than nothing."

Thankfully, I did feel better once I got my rhythm going. It was a pleasant surprise to discover the soreness didn't hamper my running flow. Hurray!

On a tangential note...
I heard Adele's "Hello" on the radio at least three times on Saturday. It promptly got stuck in my head.

Since Adele is so popular, I know it's probably not necessary for me to share the video. But for the sake of completeness, here you go:
I have a rather random association with this song. Adam and I went to a Second City improv show a few weeks ago where the audience suggested this song for the basis of a skit. The improv artists altered the lyrics so hilariously that I still giggle thinking about it to this day.

Given this, I listened to this song a few times while running and paid closer attention to the original lyrics. I was intrigued by the line, "Did you ever make it out of that town where nothing ever happened?" It makes me think of my hometown. No disrespect or anything, just an observation. (Anne, I know we touched on this yesterday.) Anyone else?

  1. Nice work running on 0 motivation. Those runs are the hardest to start but the most rewarding to finish!

    1. Thanks so much, Natalie! Isn't that the truth on how the tougher the run is to begin, the better it feels after it's over! Although, ALL runs feel good after they are over, LOL.

  2. I'm pretty sure I have Hello stuck in my head at least once a week! Hope you had a good Easter.

    1. I hope you had a great Easter, too, Alexandra! Do you listen to 101.9 on the radio at all? I swear they play Hello at least once an hour!

  3. When I was moving a few years ago, the radio played the Band Perry's song "Better Dig Two" 3 times as well. Now I can't hear that song without giggling a little bit.

    1. I don't think I'm familiar with that song! I will have to go look it up. Because of your comment, I'll probably start giggling when I hear it, too. =)

  4. I have never took a boxing class. Sounds fun. I'm sure it is quite intense though. -L

    1. Lacey, boxing classes made me realize that boxing is much harder than it looks! I have a lot more respect now for the pro boxers you see on TV!

  5. I am happy the boxing soreness didn't set back your run too much! I think an easy run the day after an intense workout helps me recover... but hills aren't an easy run. LOL. Oops. Thanks so much for coming! It was a blast!

Man, I liked that song at first but now I can't stand to her any Adele song because they are so overplayed! But I definitely thought about those lyrics the first time I heard them! Funny though, that your hometown is more happening than where I live now ;) Your home is what you make it! LOL

    1. Thank you again for an awesome class! It really was terrific to mix up the usual weekly workout routine and target some completely different muscles. I like to try keeping things well-rounded! I think it makes us better athletes overall.

Adele is COMPLETELY overplayed. Her music is great but when you've heard it for the millionth time, it does start to lose some of its luster. Do you listen to Mix 101.9? I swear they play the same set of about 25 songs over and over and over, including Adele.

I wouldn't say Lindenhurst is very happening, LOL. But yes, your home is definitely what you make it. You and Steven have been really making a lot out of your new home. =)

  6. I'm so glad we could hang out on Saturday!!! Please come back soon! :)

I usually run the day after Kim's class - I actually find it helps with the soreness! I hope you found the same to be true.

I heard "Hello" on the radio last night and thought of you. So that's what I'm going to associate it with! It's overplayed, but I really like it anyway. A lot more happens in my hometown now than when I lived there, which sometimes surprises me when I visit. In general though, I think a lot of song lyrics personally apply to me. :)

    1. I'm so glad we could hang out on Saturday! Thanks again for suggesting the festivities - we'll definitely plan on doing Round 2 soon! =)

I always think it's counterintuitive to run the day AFTER a tough workout, but you are right - it does help with the soreness. I read it was because getting the blood flowing helps with flushing out lactic acid. Makes sense - but it is so hard to get moving when your muscles are burning, yes?

LOL, that can be both a good thing and a bad thing to associate me with Hello since it gets played so often! It is funny how the associations arise, though, yes? One of my coworkers said when Adele concert tickets went on sale earlier this year, she was parked at her computer with like 5 Ticketmaster browser windows open. So now hearing Adele reminds me of my coworker!

I've been surprised going back to my hometown, too, and seeing how much it's changed. Same thing with my university, which has gotten WAY nicer after I graduated!

    2. I try to work out through the soreness, even if it's just a long, brisk walk. I think the instinct is definitely to rest, but it definitely helps!

The same is definitely true for my university! When I was there, the Sociology (my major) & Anthropology departments were in an "annex" that was basically an overgrown trailer. They've since demolished said trailer and apparently now all the cool S&A kids get to have classes in a real building like all the other departments.

    3. Ahhhh, long brisk walks are fantastic. I need to start doing more walks just to get fresh air, if nothing else!

It's funny - when I was a student, none of us had flat screen TVs or mobile phones, and email was a brand-new thing. My nephew (who's a college sophomore at my alma mater) would probably die if he had to live in the conditions I did as a student, LOL.

  7. Hello is the prototypical song to get stuck in your head because the melody is relatively simple, right? Adele does have a beautiful voice, too. Thanks Karen - the boxing class and hangouts with blog friends were a great time!

  8. The boxing and running sounds so fun! I've taken cardio kickboxing classes but never a straight boxing class. Crazy how doing a different workout like that can leave you sore in places you didn't even know you had :-)

    1. If you're free on a Saturday, maybe we can go to another one of Kim's boxing classes together! That would be a lot of fun! YES on how these different workouts target such surprisingly different muscles. I have a lot more respect for pro boxers, now. I always though boxing was just about arm strength - I had no idea how much boxing works the back muscles, too!

  9. You had another great week of varied workouts. How fun a boxing class of Kim's would be! It's good to know that soreness didn't affect your running. I will admit, I don't listen to Adele. I may be the only one on the planet. I think I've heard that song maybe once. LOL. Thanks for linking with us Emily.
