Three Things Thursday: Halloween edition

1. Do I look like my passport photo?
I haven't dressed up for Halloween in years. But back when I did, a favorite costume of mine was dressing up as a tourist (flowery shirt, khaki shorts, sneakers, hip pack, straw hat, sunglasses, hanging a camera from my neck, carrying some maps/brochures).

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of myself in my tourist get-up, but something like this was my inspiration:

Come to think of it, I always wore sneakers but it would have been an even better look to wear socks with sandals. E.g.:

Woo-hoo!!!

(By the way - a little side story on passport photos. The specs on U.S. passport photos include a white background. Adam recently had a photographic adventure with wearing a white shirt during his passport photo-shoot. =D )

2. Fat Tuesdays
Since I don't have a tourist costume picture to share, here's a real Halloween picture. It was taken probably seven years ago with my friend Mark.

Party on, rock on!

Just a mask and some Mardi Gras beads that I got in New Orleans. Keeping things simple!

3. Curses! Foiled Again
I had recently made a loose goal to run at least 60 miles every month. I'm at 56 miles for the month of October, so I was hoping to get in four more miles today.

This Saturday I am running the Carrera de los Muertos 5K, and they have packet pickup today at a location about 2.5 miles away from where I live. I thought that maybe this evening I could run there to pick up my packet, and log about 5 miles round-trip in the process. Productive AND efficient, right? YES!

Unfortunately, it it is raining like the dickens today. I present to thee, Exhibit 1. Aka, the weather forecast for today. I can't remember the last time I've ever seen a 100% chance of rain for pretty much all of daylight.

I feel bad for all the trick-or-treaters and their parents trying to make the rounds amidst the torrential downpour. What a bummer for them! And needless to say, I don't think I'll be taking a run to packet pickup today, either. =(

Happy Halloween to all! Let me know what fun celebratory festivities you have on the agenda!

  1. Happy Halloween! I love costumes, so I am most certainly dressed up today.

Bummer about the rain. At least Chicago has a lot of apartment buildings. Maybe kids can luck out and hit up one of those instead?? I dunno.

Good luck on your run this weekend.

    1. Yay!!! Are you wearing the awesome flames costume from last weekend's Monster Dash? Or are you wearing something different today? Pictures, please!

Ah yes - I live in a high-rise condo building and every year management organizes indoor trick-or-treating for the kids that live here. It's definitely a nice way to stay protected from the elements, but I think there is something so festive about trick-or-treating outside in the crisp air and running from house to house, right? But at the same time, treats are treats. =D

Thanks for the well wishes on this weekend's race! Likewise, I wish you a nice weekend of relaxation after your two consecutive weekends of half marathons!!! =)

    2. Picture is up on Facebook... I'm a mermaid!!

I agree, there is something more "magic" about trick-or-treating outside. But in the Midwest, with unpredictable weather, I guess you take what you can get!!

    3. Oh my goodness - the mermaid costume is so cute! Love the silver hair, sparkly skirt, and shiny top!!! It actually looks pretty comfortable, too!

Ah yes, in the Midwest, the weather is unpredictable - who knew that it would be in 60s in late October! So we've all learned to adapt. "It's 40 degrees in February? Time to wear shorts!"

  2. I love your costume ideas! :) So easy and clever!

I think you should still go for the run! It says 100% for here all day too and it hasn't rained since 9:00! And besides... it's fun to run in the rain!

    1. Thanks so much, Kim! I loved your family's pirate costumes, too!

It stopped raining here about an hour ago so yes, I very well may still go this afternoon! It is fun to run in the rain as long as it is not very cold out (and I will take these 60-degree temps for the end of October!) Although, my Garmin 305 died the last time I went running in the rain - so I've learned my lesson that it might be safer to skip the GPS watch in precipitation! =D

    2. Yay! I am happy the run is a go! :)

Sometimes I put the watch face on the inside of my arm when it rains - I have heard of watches not working after a run in the rain. Not cool!

    3. Four miles DONE!!! I just went for a run around the neighborhood during a late lunch hour. No packet pickup, unfortunately, since it doesn't open until 4:00. But 60 miles for the month of October are in the books!!!

Good idea on putting the watch face on the inside of your arm during precipitation! I'll have to remember that for the future.

    1. The question is... do you wear white socks with your sandals, or black socks?!?!?!?

  4. Kinda tan colored/gray. I'm not that big of a nerd! :)

    1. I actually had a discussion with my stepdad-in-law about whether or white or black socks are better. His thought was that black socks were worse because they make it look like a businessman gone wrong. But I said that white socks could be considered worse because they contrast more sharply with the sandals. (Yes, the things we talk about, LOL)

  5. It's been raining here all day! Kids' Halloween parade at school was cancelled and now who knows for TorT? Color me bummed! But it's never rained on Halloween for as long as I've had kids so I guess we were due. Yay for getting your run in! I turned over to 60 miles today too!

    1. What a bummer that the Halloween parade at school was cancelled! The kids must have been really disappointed. =( Here is hoping everyone can salvage SOME trick-or-treating tonight. Maybe not hours on end, but at least a little bit!

Yay for 60-mile Octobers for both of us!!! Can't beat 60-degree temps in late October, eh? I was out there today in shorts and a s/s shirt, but could have easily worn a tank top!

  6. That's awesome that you got your run in! I'm still bummed that I waited too long to sign up for Saturday. Oh well. I suppose in the years I've been racing I've never encountered a sold out race so I suppose it's my time!

Also, I really like your tourist costume idea. You should resurrect it next year!

    1. Thanks, Erin! I am also so bummed that you weren't able to register for Carrera de los Muertos. Who knew that it was such a popular race!?!?!? It got onto my radar screen for the first time in September when Maggie mentioned that she was signed up for it - otherwise I don't know if I would have ever heard about it. Maybe next year we can all run it together?!?!?

Glad you like the tourist costume idea! It is really a super simple costume that can be created with ordinary things at home, which is why it's one of my favorites. Did you dress up for Halloween? If so, please share pictures!!!
