There's more to the story

I absolutely loved Katie's post sharing the extra details behind Instagram photos! Here are the truths and realities behind a few of my Instagram photos.

Actual caption: Making pesto sauce (at Cooking Fools cooking school)
What I was really thinking: I just dumped about 4 CUPS of oil into this food processor. I am never eating pesto sauce again. Ever.

Actual caption: Holy cow!!! (at Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse)
What I was really thinking: I look like a cheesy tourist! This is not the most professional-looking picture of myself to be posting on social media. Should I even be sharing it?

Actual caption: This frisbee player has seen better days.
Reality: This photo was taken on Super Bowl Sunday, when Chicago got hit with a MASSIVE blizzard. That afternoon, I was really unhappy that I had to run to the office to take care of an errand. It was total misery slogging through the blinding snow and unplowed streets/sidewalks. I snapped this photo while shuffling home.

Actual caption: I taught Junior Achievement (2nd grade) today! This is an assortment of mementos, thank-you cards, and learning tools from the program. (at Lawndale Academy)
Reality: I was completely exhausted from being on my feet all day long and trying unsuccessfully to corral a classroom full of energetic 7-year olds. I will never again take for granted that I have a desk job where I get to sit on my butt all day.

Actual caption: Making an urgent snack stop in the Big Easy. The bag of beignets was filled with enough powdered sugar to kill three people! (at Cafe Du Monde at Riverwalk)
Reality: I also had an obscene amount of powdered sugar on my jeans. No amount of dusting seemed to get rid of it, either. I was ready to get stopped by the police for suspicion of being in possession of controlled substances.

Actual caption: Presiding over Chicago City Council! (Or rather, touring city hall during the Chicago Architectural Open House event)
Reality: Notice the blue covering on the table? This was to ensure that random visitors like me didn't spill anything or cause any damage to the chambers, haha.

Your turn! What photos have you shared on social media where there was more to the story than the caption?

  1. Love this! The real thoughts are so much more interesting! I'm LOL over the powdered sugar. Why does it do that? It won't let you keep any secrets, for sure.

    1. Thanks HoHo! A few other folks have shared similar "behind-the-scenes" posts and it is fascinating to hear some of the real stories. Are you on Instagram, by the way? If so, you should join in on the fun!

YES on powdered sugar being a total litmus test for the truth, LOL. Attack of the killer powdered sugar!

  2. Haha! I'd risk total coverage in PS if I could get my hands on a bag of beignets.

    1. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! So true - the beignets are totally worth it (although, preferably in an at-home environment, LOL).

  3. The one I posted of my post-race brunch drink after my half on Saturday should have said "Just ran an awesome half and have zero friends here to go to brunch with. The bartender took forever to get to me. Feeling really lonely right now."

It got better after I got food, though :-)

    1. Food always makes things better! That is a huge bummer that there wasn't a big gathering of CRBs at the South Shore Half to help you celebrate. Next year (especially for that kind of amazingly affordable registration price!)

You should do a blog post with a collection of your behind-the-scenes Instagram photos! Would love to read yours!!!

  4. POWDERED SUGAR! Laughing so much right now. Eating a powered sugar donut always makes you look like you have the table manners of a 3 year old, right?!

    1. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yes - it is impossible to eat anything with powdered sugar on it and still look graceful/professional. Maybe the next time I have the opportunity to order in food for a meeting with someone of high ranking, I should bring in beignets just to watch the adventures that will ensue. LOL

  6. I LOVE this concept of Katie's! It almost makes me wish I had Instagram so I could do a post like this haha.

Also, I <3 Open House Chicago. Hands down my favorite weekend in the city. I've seen so many cool places through that weekend (though I've never stopped by City Hall! I should put that on my list for next year.)

    1. Do it, Bethany!!! Create an Instagram account!!! I have to say that out of all the social media platforms, Instagram is one of my favorites!

Open House Chicago rocks! This past year was the first I'd ever heard of it or went to any of the sites. How did it take me this long to find out about it? Next year I'm going to prepare in advance to visit more places. City Hall was really cool and people were taking full advantage of the photo opportunities there. =)
