Weekend Wrap: 8/21/15 to 8/23/15

Hello, everyone! Popping in and linking up with HoHo and Tricia to recap my weekend.

On Friday I got a much-needed haircut. Here is the before and after:

Friday night, Adam and I went to check out a local joint called the Wise Owl Drinkery and Cookhouse. They have a nice outdoor patio so we tried to take advantage of our final weeks of summer weather.

On Saturday morning, I went to a Nike Training Club event. We went through a benchmarking workout to help measure our fitness levels, then did some yoga.

Saturday afternoon, Adam and I went to Taste of Greektown. It was very windy and crowded, but the food was outstanding. You could smell the aroma from literally a mile away!

Adam (and every other guy in the vicinity) was fascinated by an enormous electronic rotisserie we saw near one of the restaurants. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture, but it was mechanically and rhythmically spinning dozens of skewers over open flames.

Saturday night, Anne was hosting a wedding celebration at Schnitzel Platz. Many congratulations to her and her new husband, Terry!

Left to right: Me, Anne, and Erin

I enjoyed the live polka band:

The food was very authentically German, of course. Sausage, schnitzel, dumplings, sauerkraut, spaetzle, plenty of beer, etc. Check out the beer boots!

We had a funny moment when one of the food runners brought out the following dish:

We asked a waiter what it was. His enthusiastic response: "I have no idea!!!" (It turns out it was a dumpling made out of either potato or bread.)

Sunday morning, I ran the Fort2Base 10 Nautical-Mile race. Full recap to come tomorrow. In the meantime, here is a picture of the fabulous medal:

After the race, Adam and I had lunch with my mom, then came back home to relax for the rest of the day. Now, onto the new workweek!

Your turn! Tell me about your weekend!

  1. How did I miss that the Taste of Greektown was going on?! Looks delicious just from the photos!

    1. There was SO MUCH going on in the city this weekend. I wanted to go to the Ukrainian Festival but just didn't have time. The West Loop Art Festival was taking place just a couple blocks away from Greektown, too. Combine that with all the road construction and closures, and it was quite a traffic-palooza!

  2. Pretty impressed that you went to a wedding with German food and then ran F2B the next morning. You are my hero.

    1. Thanks Wendy! Nothing like living dangerously when it comes to pre-race fueling, eh? =D

  3. We ended up at Wise Owl on Sunday for dinner because we literally COULD NOT get to the grocery store in our car. So, we parked the car back at home and walked to dinner. We debated getting food at the one of the festivals but they're always so crowded.

I'm looking forward to your race recap! And it was fun to see you on Saturday night.

    1. What did you think of Wise Owl? Were you able to sit outdoors? The traffic in the West Loop was so bad over the weekend. Two festivals plus all the construction and road closures does not make for good traffic flow! Taste of Greektown was indeed very crowded - Adam and I had to eat standing up for most of it. So Wise Owl was a good choice!

Thanks, I'm putting the finishing touches on the F2B recap as we speak! It was fun to see you on Saturday night, too!!!

    2. Jason got the Wise Owl burger and I got the smoked pork nachos and we shared some orange habanero wings. I was a little sad that the wings were deep fried but I guess I don't order wings often enough to know if that's the standard! They were tasty but Jason would have liked them to be spicier. The food was fine but I wouldn't say there was anything too spectacular about it. Maybe we should have gone with the tacos!

But, yes, we did get to sit outside. There was hardly anyone there!

    3. I ordered the chicken tenders and was also sad to see that they were deep fried! Likewise, I never order wings so I wouldn't have known how to compare them. Glad you got to sit outside, though!!! The weather was gorgeous on Sunday night!

    1. Thanks Katie! I am looking forward to seeing you on Friday night, too! I was realizing today that I haven't seen you since before you announced your pregnancy. Can't believe how quickly the time goes by!!!

  5. I can't wait to hear how a Schnitzel Platz-fueled race went :) I didn't see too much rain around here yesterday morning, so hopefully it stayed away from the race!

I'm so glad you guys came! I wish I had gotten a chance to chat more, but we'll all just have to hang out again soon.

Taste of Greektown sounds awesome. I love Greek food!

    1. Thanks again for hosting the celebration on Saturday, Anne - it was so good to see you! Congratulations once again to you and Terry. We'll all definitely find another time to get together and hang out again very soon. In the meantime, I hope things go smoothly settling into your new home!!!

I'm putting the finishing touches on my F2B race recap and in short, the rain did behave itself. =)

Taste of Greektown was really fun. Windy and crowded, but you just can't beat the food being cooked outdoors right in front of your eyes!!! It smells so good!!!

  8. Great haircut. I'm in desperate need of one but I can't give up my ponytail in this heat just yet. Greek food and German food in one weekend. Yummy. I love the beer boots. That's an awesome medal. I can't wait to read your race recap. Thanks so much for linking up with us today!

    1. I hear you on the ponytail in the heat! The last thing you want is to have your hair swinging around in your face and eyes amidst brutal humidity. It was definitely a great weekend of eating and drinking! Thanks - the medal is one of my favorites, too. As always, thank you so much for hosting the link-up!!!

  9. Wow Emily that Nike Training club event sounds interesting! I'd love to hear more about this. Isn't it nice to sit outside and enjoy dinner! It's still so hot here at dinner time it's hard to do that until the fall anyway. Ha I love the beer boots! That looks like it holds quite a lot too! The race bling is really nice! Thanks for linking up with us this week we appreciate you! :)

    1. Thanks Tricia! The Nike event was held in conjunction with a series they are doing called "Find Your Fast." Over a 12-week period, they send out weekly workouts and then measure how much progress you make on speed, agility, balance, etc. during the start, middle, and end of the 12 weeks. It sounds like a great program (even though I just popped in for the mid-program evaluation, LOL).

Thanks so much for hosting the link-up! I am loving reading all the shared posts!!!

  10. One of my roommates went to Taste of Greektown over the weekend (or at least, she planned to - I guess I don't know for sure if she went or not), and I thought it sounded like the ideal street fest! I'm not really a fan of street fests so I didn't go, but man oh man do I love me some Greek food.

    1. Taste of Greektown is great because it's only a few blocks, so it's not overwhelmingly big - and it is FREE. None of that "required donation" crap that some other street fests list! The food really is awesome, too. Although, you can certainly go to Greektown any other day and eat the same food. It's just about the atmosphere of eating it after watching it get cooked on the street right before your eyes, right? =D
