Currently

It's been awhile since I've done a "state-of-the-moment" post. I got inspired after reading Kelly's latest "Currently" - so today I am going to throw my hat into the mix.
Currently feeling:
Mentally - very cheerful. I'm excited for a fun weekend coming up, and I am loving the fall weather that has finally arrived. This past Tuesday, I went for a quick run after work and my paces felt so effortless. It was pure runner's heaven.

Physically - my hips are sore from Mobility class yesterday. I wonder why it's so common for runners to have weak hips?
See what I did there? =D
In any event, the Mobility classes have made a noticeable impact on my once-perpetually sore hamstrings. I'm really encouraged by the progress!

Currently drinking:
Water, straight-up. I have not been good about staying hydrated.

Earlier this week, I underwent a body composition analysis which showed unfavorable trends. I heard that dehydration can have a negative impact on these analyses. This became a wake-up call to eliminate that factor (amongst other things, of course).
I saw this and had to share because it is proof that marketing can spin anything in a different light. =)
(I'm not too sure about the temporary deafness/hair loss/death fact, though?)
Currently needing to:
Go through my closet and clear out anything I don't wear anymore. Maggie has been talking about hosting a clothing swap in October, which would be perfect. If not, it's definitely time to make some donations.

Currently thinking about:
Going carless in the foreseeable future. My car is making some noises, which probably indicate that it needs work AGAIN... and if so, we've hit our breaking point. My car is my baby and I love it, so this makes me sad. But with the rising repair costs, it's getting harder to justify keeping it for the four times a month that it gets driven. Sigh.

Currently listening to:
This song, which the Blackhawks might play at the United Center during game breaks. I heard it when I was watching last night's preseason game on TV.
It reminded me of last spring when I was at Game 5 of the Hawks vs Blues playoff series. That night, the crowd was the loudest I'd ever experienced at the UC. This song came on and all 22,000+ fans in attendance were singing along at the top of their lungs. It was a very memorable moment.

I can't wait for hockey season to begin!

Currently craving:
Warm, fall-themed foods. Green bean casserole, butternut squash soup, cheesy mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie. I've got a pre-made chocolate Oreo pie crust in my pantry that I want to bake into a pumpkin pie as soon as time permits.

Side note: I saw Pumpkin Spice Oreos on the marketplace. Wonder how it would turn out to make a pumpkin pie with a Pumpkin Spice Oreo crust? I think it would either be complete overkill, or the most amazing explosion of pumpkin pie flavors, ever!
Currently scheming:
Travel plans! I've seen a lot of extremely affordable airfares so my mind is running away with ideas. I just booked a trip to visit my best friend, Vanitha, in Alaska next month. I'm also eyeing some warm-weather destinations for early 2017 (especially since the Farmer's Almanac is predicting an extraordinarily brutal Chicago winter this year). If only I wasn't restricted by my full-time job and my bank account...

Currently wearing:
Ankle dress pants, a black blouse, and heels. This will be the last time I'll have to wear dress pants to work until 2017! My workplace is selling monthly jeans passes for October, November, and December (with the proceeds going to charity). My bosses sprung for three months of passes for the entire team. Fridays are already jeans days, and we're into October next week. As such, let the daily jeans-wearing commence tomorrow!!!

Tell me about some of your "Current" items?

  1. I am excite for your AK trip! And for the jean passes! Awesome-ness! My office is casual and I love it. Although I find it trickier to look nice in jeans than in dress pants/a dress!

    1. Thanks Kim! I'm going to go back to your AK recaps to get some ideas. I agree that it's harder to look professional in jeans, although I do enjoy seeing my coworkers' personalities come through more when they dress casually. See you and Anne bright and early this Saturday!!!

    2. I am late... but YAY!!! :) Hope we can see you again soon!

Also, let me know if you want to chat re: what we did in AK! Truly, my ideal AK trip is ALL outdoors stuff!

    3. Thanks so much, Kim! Great to see you and Anne today, and I hope to see you both again soon, too!

Would love to chat more about your trip to Alaska!!! I've got a couple more weeks left to plan. =)

  2. The fact is that a lot of us runners only do one kind of exercise - running. So we have developed calves and hamstrings but all our other muscles are flabby and under-exercised.
I know cause that's my story too.

    1. The sad part is that I've tried very hard to diversify my workouts! I do a lot of strength training, yoga, and Zumba - yet the hips are still a stubborn area of weakness! I guess years and years of running can really build up the muscle imbalances, yes?

  3. Lol. Love the idea of jeans passes. Such a cool way to get people to contribute to charity.

    1. I think Jeans Passes are a great way to get people to contribute to charity, too! It's a very clever idea - and it comes at pretty much no side cost. Win, win for everyone!

  4. I went for a run yesterday after work and it was HEAVENLY. I'm obsessed with this weather (though I could do without the wind and rain that accompanied me for the last two miles haha).

Too much water can most definitely kill you - that's hyponatremia. That's why they tell you to not overdrink during marathons if you're not taking in electrolytes. It gets your sodium balance all out of whack and can kill you if it gets too out of hand. (Also happens to non-athletes, too, but usually due to medication/medical history/age). And then of course too much water could also drown you, too. When I was in middle school they made us read about the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide and asked us if we thought it should be banned. We pretty much all said yes - turns out that's just a funny name for water (H2 0, after all). It was used to teach us to not believe everything you read on the Internet. It used a lot of the same things as your graphic, though! I believe this was the website, if you're looking for a laugh: http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html

    1. The temperature and low humidity is perfect these days! I completely agree with you about the wind and rain, too. I got caught in a massive downpour yesterday while biking home, and it wasn't pretty.

Dihydrogen monoxide, eh? I've never heard of that term but from a chemical symbol perspective, I get it! Very clever. I've heard a lot about hyponatremia, and of course about drowning - but I've never heard that too much water can cause hair loss and temporary deafness? Bizarre! Guess we should all just be careful about water, right? =D

  5. I hope we get to do the clothing swap! I have some things set aside for it already.

Whatcha got planned for the weekend?

    1. I hope we do the clothing swap, too! I don't know how I keep accumulating so many race shirts, but I'm looking forward to recycling them!!!

On Saturday I'm going to Kim's boxing class with Anne, then going to see my parents. Sunday I am hoping to get tickets to the WCBC Citystrong workout, and/or considering going to the Fulton Market Festival. What about you, what's on your calendar for the weekend?

  6. Do you think you'll really wear jeans every day for 3 months?! My office switched to a casual dress code about 10 years ago, but sometimes I feel too casual in jeans (just like Kim, sometimes I think it's hard to look "nice" in jeans!) and dress up anyway.

I remember when I finally got rid of my old car. I think I had it in the city for 5 or 6 years before it came too expensive (the parking stickers alone - ugh!) and annoying (like when I'd forget to move it for street cleaning). At one point I actually had a mechanic tell me some of the issues were simply caused by the car not being driven very often. I think zip car and things like that are relatively inexpensive if you really only drive a few times a month.

I've been loving hearty, warm, fall cooking lately :) I've done chili, stew and a couple casseroles and can't wait to make more!

    1. I only have about 4-5 pairs of jeans total. So unless I do some serious shopping, I will most definitely NOT be wearing jeans every day! =) It is nice to have the option, though, yes?

OMG, the parking stickers and street cleaning regulations and city stickers and license plate registration fees and insurance... it really does add up very quickly. I have also had mechanics tell me my car had premature rust and other brake issues from not being driven often enough. I was told to take it out for a drive at least once a week. I try to find errands to run to make it worthwhile. But admittedly there have been a number of times where I literally just took the car out for a spin because it had been over a week. Between public transit, Divvy, Uber/Lyft, and all the other car-sharing services out there, there are definitely lots of great transport resources!

      Chili, stew, and casseroles... yummmmmm.....

  7. Jeans passes? That's pretty cool! We could never do that at work--we have to look "professional" for the patients. I do wear jeans on Saturdays, tho. I mean, it's Saturday!

    1. Interestingly, I've gone into doctors offices a few times where my doctor was wearing jeans! Your office must be more conscientious of professional standards. =) And yes - I second wearing jeans on Saturdays!!! On Sundays too! And you might as well throw Fridays in there, as well, LOL.

  8. Hi Kelly - my pleasure! =) Thanks for the inspiration!

I laughed at the serial killers/drug dealers reference, too. Pretty clever, eh?

Moving is definitely a challenging process but you are right on it being a great opportunity to clear out excess clutter! I have an old coworker who rented a storage space when his house was on the market so he could deposit the cluttering items there for presentation. He said afterwards that he wished he could just direct the entire storage contents to charity! Hehehe.

Green bean casserole is so classic, yes? I like adding cheese to it!

Yes, Vanitha is in Anchorage! She warned me that all the tourist business have already closed down for the season. I looked at the sunrise/sunset data at in late October they only get about 8 hours of sunlight! So this will be an experience. Labor Day there must have been a beautiful time to go!

  9. I try hard to do a variety of workouts as well to offset the hip thing and I still have weak hips. It's frustrating. I am totally loving all the fall comfort dishes as well. Plus I've got winter squash out the wazoo so lots of that in roasted and in soup.

    1. Marcia, you indeed do a lot of strength training and other workouts so I am surprised that you have weak hips, too! Guess it comes with the territory of being a runner, yes? Your gargantuan pumpkin picture still makes my eyes bug out. Lots of great pumpkin pies to come for you and your family, yes? =)

  10. That darn bank account and full time job. Sometimes I wish I could travel for work, but then I hate airports and flying, and I love to see my furbaby every day.

    1. Right??? I used to travel between 80-100%, and it was definitely not nearly as glamorous as a lot of people might think. If I had a furbaby I'd want to see it every day, too!

  11. Loving the jeans idea! I would definitely pay for it as well. Cannot wait to hear about your AK trip! Should be lots of fun.

Currently, I am in taper mode and want to take it easy till next Sunday. :-)

    1. Thanks Zenaida! Alaska will be different as there will be very limited daylight. It'll make it tougher to get in a good run with that, as well as all the local wildlife. =)

Yay for taper mode!!! The weather is looking really good for next Sunday right now, here is hoping it either stays that way or gets even better!!!

  12. I am so jealous of the jeans wearing months!! But I only own like 2 pairs, so I wish my office had a "wear your running clothes" to work day!!

mmm!! Mash potatoes!! now I'm craving mash potatoes too!!

Good job on cleaning your closet! You have inspired me to tackle my closet too!

    1. Thanks Ana! Likewise - I only own a few pairs of jeans, so I am still going to mix it up with regular biz casual attire. How cool would that be if offices had "running clothes" days??? We need to start looking for jobs with running companies - I bet they get to wear their gear every day. They probably get admonished when they don't, LOL.

Aren't mashed potatoes the best? Especially for us runners when we need to carb load. =)

Hurray for clearing out the closets!!!
