Weekly recap - May 30 - June 5, 2016

I absolutely loved Karen's post from a few weeks ago about how the numbers from our workouts don't always tell the story. Today I am going to take a page from her book.
Here's the summary:
MONDAY - Rest
TUESDAY - Rest
WEDNESDAY - Zumba class
THURSDAY - 10 minutes stationary biking, 40 minutes lifting
FRIDAY - Accumulator class
SATURDAY - Super Sunny 5K (recap coming soon)
SUNDAY - 3.5 miles (estimated) of walking with my mom at Independence Grove

At first glance, it probably looks like a decent week. But let's talk now about what the summary does NOT tell you.

The beauty of weekly training recaps is that by definition, you only analyze one week at a time. This makes it less obvious that...

Dating back to last week, I went for a stretch of five days where my only workout was one 3-mile run. You might have noticed the consecutive rest days on Monday and Tuesday. You may or may not notice that I had also taken rest days on the preceding Friday and Sunday (May 27 and May 29). This was primarily attributable to the craziness of Memorial Day weekend, as well as me starting to feel a bit under the weather. In any event, it was definitely not my finest stretch.
What else?

It doesn't tell you... I was thisclose to skipping Zumba on Wednesday due to having a cold, feeling fatigued, and having zero motivation. It took every ounce of perseverance I had to drag my sorry butt to class. Once there, I took the dance moves much more slowly than usual and avoided looking at myself in the mirror. =D
Thankfully, the effort ended up being completely worth it. I still had a lot of fun and I felt much better afterwards.

It doesn't tell you... My strength training on Thursday was done grudgingly and not at 100% effort for the same reasons as the day before. Prior to this day, I hadn't done any strength work in a week. I know it takes more than a week to really lose your fitness. However, my primary drive to hit the gym that day was still simply fear of atrophy.
Nobody wants to turn into a pumpkin.
It doesn't tell you... The fitness class I took on Friday was due to a schedule conflict rather than choice. I wanted to do something low-impact so I was looking forward to yoga class. Unfortunately, I had a meeting conflict. Argh!!! Accumulator class it was. I ended up taking every single modification the instructor suggested. Even so, the class still completely zapped what mediocre energy I had, e.g.:
Thank God it was Friday!

It doesn't tell you... I felt like an alien during the first two miles of the Super Sunny 5K yesterday.
This was not surprising given I had only run a total of 3 miles the entire preceding week. I did start getting into a rhythm in the third mile of the race, but by then it was almost over. Alas, the challenges of these short-distance events!

It doesn't tell you... I wasn't prepared for the amount of walking I ended up doing with my mom today at Independence Grove (a suburban forest preserve). Translation: I wasn't dressed appropriately. It was sunny with temps in the upper 70s, and I was wearing jeans, a cotton shirt, and leather flats. It felt a bit like this:
D'oh!
That was a lot of lowlights, eh?

Everything aside, I have now kicked my cold and am thankful to have had a restful and productive weekend. It is going to be a good week ahead!

How was your week? What are you looking forward to these days?

  1. That walk sounds miserable. Did you get blisters from wearing the flats?

    1. Thankfully my flats are super comfortable and well broken-in, so no blisters! I actually did enjoy the walk - but from now on I think I am going to keep a spare pair of sneakers and some workout gear in my car, just in case. =)

    2. Good plan! I keep winter boots in my trunk in case I ever have winter car troubles while I'm wearing heels. :-)

    3. That's another great idea! The car's trunk is there for a reason, and we should take advantage of it for ALL weather considerations! Even so, thank goodness we don't have to worry about winter car troubles for at least a few months...hopefully!

  2. I can't believe people actually workout in jeans...haha.That would be so uncomfortable. Some wks are better than others. Life does get in the way sometimes w my workouts too. I am feeling guilty about not doing yoga all wk and missing two runs due to work..blah!. Hopefully this wk goes better.

    1. I can't believe it, either! I've seen folks work out barefoot, in dress shoes, sandals, you name it. But hey, I guess it's still better than nothing, right? Life definitely does get in the way with our workout routines, and it can be frustrating. I hope this week goes better for you, too!

  3. Great job this week anyways! Sometimes it takes every ounce of your being to get a workout in (or get to a class) and sometimes you end up skipping a workout..which I did a couple times this week. Glad you are feeling better :)

    1. Thanks Kayla! I'm definitely of the mindset that even a little something is better than nothing at all... but there are definitely times when enough is enough and life just gets in the way. But working out is a lifestyle, right? It's more about long-term consistency than just one day here or there!!! Thank goodness. =)

  4. I think it is normal to have ups and downs with exercise and this is a new week to start fresh. Glad your cold is gone and you can get back to normal activities feeling better. I call it a victory if you make it too your workouts and yea, jeans at the gym is a real eye opener! That and flip flops!

    1. Thank you for the positive thoughts! Yes, if we didn't have ups and downs, we'd all be professional athletes (and heck, even they have their ups and downs, right?)! Oh gosh, flip flops at the gym would make me shudder. Imaging dropping a weight on your foot. Ouch!!!

  5. I am happy you are feeling better! And we all have weeks (and sometimes longer, eek!) like that, so don't sweat it.

Independence Grove has NO shade or wind protection! I used to think I liked to do races there... ha ha. Nope.

    1. Thanks Kim! You are absolutely right - we all go through these stretches, it's just about how we learn to deal with them, yes? OMG - I was having flashbacks from various of the Prairie State Halfs we've run at Independence Grove because indeed, there was NO protection from the elements! It'd be much nicer to run there in the fall when the temperatures are cooler. =)

  6. I've learned the hard way to keep an extra pair of shoes in my car when I'm heading out! It has meant wearing a dress and gym shoes once though ha

    1. I've worn a dress and gym shoes before, too! But at least my feet were comfortable. =) Priorities, priorities, priorities!!!!! =D

  7. I've been there with scraping together any energy I have to do a workout. I feel better later, but getting to the workout is a mental game.

    1. You nailed it, Lesley. The hardest part is usually just getting started - and that part is almost ALL mental! What is that expression about things being X% inspiration and X% perspiration? It should be heavily tilted towards the mental %!!!

  8. Love that Lego guy passed out on the beach! Ha, ha! Great job getting to that Zumba class even though it took all of your perseverance! Looking forward to your 5k recap!

    1. LOL - thanks Pete. =) I haven't quite figured out the Lego guy's scale, but he looks larger than life, no? Appreciate the positive thoughts and congrats again on your 10K PR from the weekend. I am amazed at how you always get your race recaps posted so quickly!!!

  9. I'm sorry to hear you had a cold, I hope you are feeling better.

I'm glad you went to zumba, sweating those germs out is always my choice of medicine!

    I can't wait for your 5K recap!

    1. Thank you so much, Ana! OH YES - I am a firm believer in holistic remedies (i.e. avoiding medicine as much as possible) so exercise and good music is always just what I order for myself during those colds, too! Great minds think alike. =)

  10. Thank you, Kelly! What a bummer that you've had a low-grade cold, too. I totally understand to the horrific feeling when it's beautiful and sunny outside but we're under the weather! I wish you the speediest of recoveries!!!

  14. I love the "it doesn't tell you" concept. But really, you did have a good week because you were active even when you weren't feeling your best. I think 5ks are always hard because you need more time to work things out! I hope you are feeling better now. Thanks for linking with us Emily!

    1. Karen really hit the nail on the head with the "it doesn't tell you" concept, yes? I'm going to keep borrowing it in the future. =) Thank you so much for the positivity, HoHo! As always, thank you to you and Tricia for hosting the linkup!

    1. Thanks, Sharon! One of the miracles of the body is its ability to heal with some time. I am thankful for having now gotten over the cold =). I hope you are having a great week, too!!!

  16. Well you are right our weeks can fly by without really telling the whole truth, but only you know the truth and now we do too! What are you doing to do different? Sometimes we need to take a look at where we've been and re-group, re-adjust to get back on track! Thank you for this honest look I bet things will look quite a bit different in the weeks to come! :)

    1. Hehehehe, the secret is out, yes? Other than obviously getting over my cold, I am ready to shake up the routine some more. I'm ready to take a break from running, and I'd like to continue experimenting with other types of fitness. Team sports would be fun for the interaction, but I do working out solo, too. Much to think about! Here is hoping things do look different in the weeks to come. =)
