2 seconds of fame, and Friday favorites

Happy Friday! I wanted to share a fleeting moment of publicity that I experienced earlier this week. I am also going to join in a few of the many Friday Favorites linkups!

Almost famous (okay, not really)
Comcast Sportsnet Chicago had a special "Behind the Lens" broadcast of the Blackhawks game this past Wednesday. It was a very unique introspective. They displayed various snippets of the work that goes on behind the scenes to produce a smooth and informative broadcast. Clearly there was an unbelievable level of coordination and detail involved. However, the directors and staff made the telecast flow like a piece of cake.

Fans were asked to tweet their pictures and reactions from the broadcast. Yours truly did just that:

Here's a television shot from the Behind the Lens broadcast. Check out the familiar-looking tweet scrolling at the bottom!

Woo hoo!!!

Now if I may toot my own Blackhawks fan/Twitter horn for just a moment, this is actually the second time that one of my tweets has been shared on TV. Here is a screenshot from the first time, which was back in December:

And with that, my 2 seconds of fame are officially OVER!

Let's move on to some of my current favorites.

Honey Stinger Waffles
Honey Stinger had a booth at the Rock N Roll DC race expo. They caught my eye with an enormous array of waffle samples. (Note to all running expo vendors - if you provide product samples, I will come!)

WOW, are those waffles yummy! I am normally very partial to GU, with the occasional foray into Clif Shot gels. However, I couldn't resist picking up a few of the Honey Stinger waffles. I like them so much that I went onto Amazon and started a purchase subscription. These babies are going to give my GU and Clif Shot gels a run for the money (no pun intended).

Crazy tights
For the longest time, my lower-body workout attire consisted entirely of plain black shorts, plain black capris, plain black tights. Not anymore! I love love LOVE the patterned workout bottoms that are all the rage this year. I can't get enough of them.

One of everything, please!

Totally rad
Adam and I were out to dinner earlier this week and the restaurant was playing a fantastic selection of 80s music. Best decade of music EVER. (The 60s are a close second, in my opinion.) I was inspired to start putting together an all-80s playlist for myself. Why did it take me so long to do this!?!? I can't wait to hit the streets in my running shoes with the dulcet tones of Foreigner, Journey, and so many others ringing in my ears.

Once again, one of everything, please!

Just a kid from Chicago
I saw this commercial the other day and it brought chills to my spine. I found it on YouTube and have watched it at least 10 times. It's especially meaningful to me since it is Chicago.

  1. Fun post! I love behind the scenes broadcasts of hockey. I am a Carolina Hurricanes fan myself, so it was neat to read your reference to hockey on your blog! I also have to comment about your new discovery of Honey Stinger Waffles. They have been one of my favorite exercise nutrition choices for a long time now and I agree that they are the BOMB! Glad you were able to sample them!

    1. Thanks, Lee! Yay for NHL hockey fans - and I've heard much about the famed Caniacs! I am a big fan of the Staal brothers, myself. (It's a shame that Jordan Staal has been so injury-prone.)

Those Honey Stinger waffles are incredible. I could eat them all day long! I'm actually a little surprised that GU and Clif Shot have such a stronghold on the fueling market because these waffles are so insanely good!

    2. J. Staal has made a impact since he returned after his broken leg, That was a big blow to the team at the beginning of the season, for sure.

I really still like to Shot Blocks as well, but don't use GU that often. When using the gels, though, I have tried to Honey Stinger as well, and if you are a GU girl, I am certain you will like them. Also have you heard of/tried Huma? I have tried them and like them, but I have friends that use them exclusively. Since I typically opt for other things beside gels, I don't buy them alot, but both of those are good ones to try if you have not!

    3. I am waiting to see if one day all four of the Staal brothers end up playing on the same team - or even better, if they all ended playing on the same line! How cool would that be!?!?!?

I will have to experiment with switching between GU and Honey Stingers. My biggest beef with GU is that it is so chemical-laden - so it'd be nice to lessen the chemical-consumption by alternating with the waffles! I have not heard of Huma. Thanks for the suggestion - I'll have to keep an eye out for them in the future!

  2. Cool! I'm going to need your autograph now. I am all about the patterned tights as well. Although some I've bought fall down. No bueno. That's a great ad. Powerade did good!

    1. LOL, me and my 2 seconds of fame. =) I hate when tights fall down. It seems that a lot of my pants, both workout or not, fit through the leg but are too big in the waist. Us runners with our muscular legs, right? Powerade really hit it out of the park with this ad! They did a great job finding a kid that looks a lot like Derrick. =)

  3. Your comment about the honey stingers comes at the perfect time! I'm trying to figure out what I want to use as fuel at Bataan. (I'd normally not do anything new, but since we will be exclusively walking, I feel less crazy about it.) I've heard these honey things were good, but I thought they looked weird. Guess I'll have to run to the store and grab a couple!

    1. Oh gosh, Amy!!! You amaze me in that you'll be doing Bataan again this year. After hearing your stories about it from last year, I am completely blown away by how challenging it sounded. YES, definitely give the Honey Stinger waffles a shot - I would love to hear what you think of them! They are all natural (unlike GU and Clif Shots - I shudder to think of all the chemicals in both) so I would bet you'd have no problem with them on race day!

  4. Yes to all the fun leggings. Have you tried Fabletics? They have my favorite leggings ever.

    1. I have heard a LOT about Fabletics - they are that monthly workout clothing subscription company, yes? Everyone has raved over Fabletics. I will have to check them out in more detail!

  5. Crazy tights + 80s playlist is basically my go-to MO. LOVE IT! Check out places like TJ Maxx and Marshalls, I get TONS of fun leggings there for cheaaaaaap!

    1. YAY for wild and crazy clothing plus 80s music! Best. Combo. Ever!!!

Oooh - thanks for the tip on TJ Maxx and Marshall's! You better believe I'll be scouring their racks in the coming weeks. =D

  6. I'm a Pittsburgh Penguins girl.. I've always tried to get my pictures/tweets to show up at games so I'm so happy that happened for you!! I've been hearing a lot about these waffles... I'm going to have to find some immediately.

    1. Maddie, my husband grew up in Pittsburgh! He is a rabid fan of both the Steelers and the Penguins - and through his influence, I'm a huge fan of both teams as well. I've been fortunate to attend some amazing games at both Heinz Field and the old Igloo/the Consol. Both the Steelers and the Penguins are awesome and have such devoted fanbases! Here is hoping that Geno comes back from his injury sooner rather than later!

    1. OMG, Honey Stinger Waffles with PB on top? Be still my grumbling stomach!!! Now you've given me the idea to try them with Nutella or Speculoos on top, too. YUMMMY!!!!!!!

  8. Yes, I need a capri intervention. All of mine a dark and solid. Boring. Is that waffle supposed to go in your pocket like a GU? It looks big.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Cheers to crazy fun patterns!!! The good thing about dark solids is that they are easy to match, though - sometimes it takes some effort to match the patterns! Good question about the waffles fitting into your pocket (I hadn't gotten that far with them yet). They are about 5 square inches, so GU is definitely much more portable...!

  9. I am not surprised they show your tweets - you are a Blackhawks PRO!!! I bet you will have more fame.

I am a HUGE honey stinger waffles fan (errr... which makes me not technically vegan, since I eat honey). Which is your fave flavor?! I love vanilla, and will get strawberry and lemon, too. I didn't care so much for chocolate and haven't tried gingersnap! I wonder if I have even tried regular? They are part of my successful fueling plan for long runs and marathons - I eat every 30 mins - one gel at 00:30, one gel at 1:00, then a honey stinger waffle at 1:30, and repeat the pattern :)

I LOVE crazy tights! Can't wait to see what you picked out.

80s music is the BEST! I went to see Foreigner Friday night and that was kind of a dream come true for me :)

    1. P.S. To echo Courtney's honey stinger waffles tip, I have also heard they are good if you take two of them and put ice cream in between :)

    2. Thanks, Kim! Watching a few hundred hours of hockey every year will eventually result in a lot of hockey familiarity, LOL.

YAY for Honey Stinger Waffles! At the race expo, they had like 8 different flavors sitting out and I tried almost every one. So far, I think the vanilla and lemon are my favorite. I like your idea of intermingling gels and waffles, too. I'm going to have fun experimenting with these waffles going forward. Waffles and ice cream!?!?!? YUMMY YUMMY!!!!!!!!!

FOREIGNER!!! "I Want To Know What Love Is" has become one of my all-time favorite 80s classic songs!!! SO COOL that you got to see them perform live!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. I got excited when I saw the honey stinger waffle - I thought you were about to rave about stroopwafels from Amsterdam.

Ugh. Why am I not still on vacation? Ha!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've heard so much about those stroopwafels and the various other European equivalents! I've never actually tried them but I hear they are awesome. (Supposedly they are a lot cheaper than the Honey Stinger Waffles, too, LOL).

Can't wait to see all of your vacation photos!

      Delete
    2. You can buy a tin of stroopwafels in the grocery store of Amsterdam for like $3. And there's about a dozen of them in there. *sighing wistfully*

I'm working on my blogs about vacation. You'll get all the details starting Friday and moving into next week.

    3. $3!!! The USD-Euro exchange rate is really favorable these days, so that's an even better deal! Sigh.

I've got my blog reader app fired up for Friday and next week!!!
